Vineyards and Wine Tours are within easy reach of Steyning. Tours are usually on offer through the summer months.
The number of successful commercial vineyards in Sussex have been growing in recent years. Locally produced wines often do very well in international competitions. The chalk soil similar to that of the Champagne region of France, warm dry climate and south facing slopes near the coast are ideal for producing quality still and sparkling wines.
The Wiston Estate Wine Tours and Experiences
The vineyard offers ‘Wine and Dine Dinners’ a vineyard tour with wine tasting and ‘Vineyard Food and Wine Pairing’ It is the nearest to Steyning: Just 6 miles away and an 11 minute drive.
The estate has produced quality English sparkling wines from the beginning, with the first vineyards planted in 2006. A collaboration between the Goring family and one of England’s top winemakers, has seen Wiston become both a marker for quality and also one of the most significant contract winemaking hubs in the country. Taste the grapes on the vines, as you walk around and compare the flavours. Learn all about the work involved in growing the grapes and producing the wine.
Bridget, the owner, provides generous samples of many of the different types of wines with explanations about how they differ. Finally she will show you around the winery so you can understand the work involved in arriving at the final product.
At present the tours take place on Saturdays and Thursday evenings (2021)
Call in at the shop then sit and drink a glass of wine on their attractive terrace, with views over the Downs! The shop is open on Tuesdays to Thursdays 12pm – 5pm, and Fridays and Saturdays 10am -5pm and they would love to see you!
You will find the vineyard is at Upperton Farm, Tillington, West Sussex, GU28 0RD.( T 01798 343695) It’s near Petworth and a 40 minute drive from Steyning on the A283 (18 miles away)
You can combine a trip here with a visit to Petworth House or to Bignor Roman Villa.
Tours at Stopham
These are usually held on most Saturdays from April to October, with an optional lunch at the lovely White Hart Pub by Stopham Bridge
The vineyard, winery and wine tasting tours normally start at 11 am or 2 pm. Tours are led by the winemaker and last about 2 hours. The site is 13 miles away and a 25 minute drive from Steyning.
