About Us

Hello, I’m Jenny

I was born locally in Worthing where I grew up, so Sussex has always felt like home.

My mother was born in Lancing (5 miles from Steyning) and Sussex was my parents’ home throughout their married lives.

When I was younger we often walked on the Downs with cousins, aunts and uncles. We particularly liked the 8-mile walk along the Seven Sisters from Exceat Country Park to Eastbourne.

My late partner and I spent happy weekends for many, many years visiting my parents and walking on the South Downs. One of our favourite walks was over the hills to Steyning. We would also sometimes drive there for a tasty pub lunch!

Why Steyning?

We loved visits to the beach and swimming too. I still miss the coast – especially in the summer.

I started looking for a cottage a few years after my parents died. I wanted to use it as a holiday let, but was also considering moving from London to Sussex. I had retired from my full time job so was free to live anywhere.

My priority was a property in a small rural town. Steyning and Arundel were at the top of my list. I decided on Steyning mainly because it was closer to Brighton!

A cousin who lived in Steyning helped me. I stayed with her and we visited properties together. It took two whole years before I found the perfect one: Rosebud Cottage!

The cottage looked good internally, but quite a lot of building work was needed. Once this was completed a trusted handyman moved in for a few weeks and made additional improvements.

The garden had been completely neglected.  The back garden had been covered with decking and ivy and brambles were thriving up the side border, beside the path.

Fortunately I am a keen gardener so quickly set about redesigning the garden. A paved area with benches was created behind the cottage, so guests could sit out and listen to the nearby millstream, surrounded by flowering plants!

I still enjoy working on the garden whenever I visit the cottage. I often eat out in the High Street cafes and restaurants when I stay. Whenever possible I spend an evening at the Steyning Jazz Club and call in at the Farmer’s Market (both on the first weekend of the month).

I Love Walking

My friends and I love walking in the area: Our favourite routes are the local ‘Lower’ and ‘Upper Horseshoe’, the circular hike from High Trees car park to Truleigh Hill Youth Hostel and back, and paths to Chanctonbury Ring. We also like to visit nearby Shoreham Beach – easily reached by bus.

Nearly 10 years have now gone by since I began letting the cottage to holidaymakers. I enjoy running it and doing all I can to make sure it is at its very best.

It is most rewarding to welcome guests and lovely to hear their positive feedback.  It is so satisfying to find that more and more guests return to the cottage again and again.
