Beautiful Bramber & Medieval St Mary’s House

Bramber and St Mary’s House are well worth a visit.

The Village:

Bramber is just a mile from Steyning. It often wins ‘Britain in Bloom’ awards. You can enjoy some nature walks at Bramber Brooks. You will also find a pub that serves food and an Indian restaurant!

Catch the no 2 bus there, or drive and leave your car in the car park.

St Mary’s House

st marys house bramberSt Mary’s is a wonderful medieval house. It is said to have the best late 15th century timber framing in Sussex. It was built around 1470 by the bishop of Winchester for pilgrims to use as an inn on their way to the tomb of St Thomas of Canterbury.

Apparently King Charles II hid in the house when he was escaping to France.

The house has some most attractive gardens which you can explore. There are also some lovely cottage style tea rooms.

Both the house and gardens are usually open from May to the end of September.  You can go there on Sundays, Thursdays and Bank Holiday Mondays (& Wednesdays in August) from 2 – 6 p.m.
